“At styre sig” (Control yourself) conference is coming together

Creating a program for the conference is coming together slowly but surely. I hope to have a program completely finished by the end of this week. Looking forward also to creating a social media strategy for the conference to see if it will attract participants. I did create a signature image, which will be (literally) the face of the conference. It should illustrate how the modern existence (in social media) is giving you many faces. The idea is that each Polaroid image is a slightly discoloured version of the person behind – but I guess that is pretty obvious.

Merete Pryds Helle has agreed to be a speaker on the conference “Control Yourself”

The Danish author Merete Pryds Helle has agreed to be a keynote speaker for the Knowledge Lab and Nordic Portfolio Forum conference “At styre sig” (Control yourself), which will take place at the University of Southern Denmark June 6-7 2012. Merete Pryds Helle has published short stories and novels – but we have asked her to speak at the conference, because she is well renowned for creating works for new media. She has written SMS short stories – and she has recently finished her first novel for iPad, named “The funeral” (in Danish). Storytelling in new media is very relevant in relation to selfpresentation in new media – this is why we asked Merete Pryds Helle to participate.

Suggesting a social media strategy for ePIC2012

As a member of the organizing committee for the ePIC conference in London July 9-12 2012, I am going to suggest a social media strategy for the conference. A very interesting task as the one thing I have experienced in using a number of social media is, that they change constantly. So you really have to be on your toes to find out, what is happening next. I am looking very much forward to this challenge.

How to design a presentation portfolio

Big typography is a good solution, because self presentation often is a question of telling stories that are hard to illustrate. Big typography allows self presentation directly through the words themselves, so to speak. By emphasizing one or more words you can get a message through, very clearly. I have been asked to join the the ePIC 2012 Conference Committee

The conference ePIC 2012 will be the 10th ePortfolio and Identity Conference. The conference will celebrate the anniversary of an adventure that started in Poitiers (France) in 2003.

2003 was also my very first portfolio conference, and I had a great time. Since then I have participated in six more conference presenting papers on 5 of these. The conferences have been a unique platform for discussing digital identity and seeing the portfolio develop as a tool. I am honored and looking very much forward to participating in the preparation of this aniversary. You can read a little more about the conference here.

Er der sammenhæng mellem skælud og portfolier?

Der er faktisk en overraskende sammenhæng, hvis man kigger nærmere på den måde skælud er formuleret på. Og interesserer sig for selv præsentation og portfolier.

Jeg voksede op ved vestkysten – og der skulle man i hvert fald helst ikke vise sig. Eller endnu værre skabe sig. Og jeg er lige kommet i tanke om, at det jeg oftest fik at vide som barn var, at nu skulle jeg altså styre mig.

Og det er jo lige præcis det som nye medier som Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, Twitter og e-portfolier forlanger af os. For det første viser vi os selv i profiler. For det andet skaber vi os selv gennem det, eller vi skaber i hvert fald versioner af os selv – persona eller hvad man nu vil kalde det. For det tredje er et af den moderne eksistens’ store spørgsmål (i hvert fald i den vestlige verden osv. osv.) hvordan vi kan styre os selv, eller måske om vi skal. De mange sammensatte og måske modsigende versioner af mig selv, som er derude, kan de, skal de, vil de blive kontrolleret af mig? Jeg er ikke længere den eneste, som formulerer sig om mig. På timebases bliver jeg tagget, linket til, referereret til, @et til. Hvad betyder det for identitet? For portfolier?

Derfor vil den næste konference – som jeg arrangerer omkring identititetskonstruktion og selv fabrikation i nye medier – have titlen: ”At styre sig”. Den finder sted den 6.-7. juni 2012 på Syddansk Universitet, Odense, Danmark. Meget mere om dette senere.

What has scolding got to do with portfolios?

Quite a lot actually, if you like to observe the exact wording of expressions AND if you are Danish. A lot of the words and phrasing of a good old fashioned scolding in Danish makes a lot of sense when talking about portfolio – and self-presentation in general. But maybe only in Danish, so for the first time I shall write this post both in English and Danish.

I grew up on the western coast of Denmark – and here you were not supposed to show off, which in Danish is to “show oneself”. Neither were you supposed to carry on about something, which in Danish would be to “create oneself”. And I realized recently that one of the things I was told most often as a child was to “control myself”. The Danish language has the exact equivalent of this expression.

But this is exactly what new media like Facebook, Tumblr, Google+ and portfolios for educational means are asking of us. Firstly we should show ourselves. Secondly through this we do create ourselves – or versions of ourselves – personas or whatever you want to call them. Thirdly, one of the big questions of present day existence (in western Europe etc. etc.) is how we control ourselves, or if we should. The many diverse and maybe contradictory versions of me out there, can they, should they, will they be controlled? I am no longer the only voice talking about me – I get tagged, linked, referenced to, @’ed on an hourly basis. What does this mean for identity? For portfolios?

So the next conference – I plan to arrange on identity construction in new media – will have the title: “To control oneself”. It will take place on June 6-7 2012 in Odense, Denmark, at the University of Southern Denmark. Stay tuned for more information.

Yes, visual reflection is possible

I realize that I haven’t been a very active blogger recently if at all. But I hope to change this now.

I just returned from London participating in ePIC 2011 conference on e-Portfolios and Identity. Many interesting presentations. It was nice to get shaken by very critical points by Donald Clark (http://www.epforum.eu/speakers).

I presented a work in progress – a series of interviews with users at Lillebaelt Academy of Professional Higher Education. What we are doing now is trying to evaluate students’ portfolios – not only on what they write, but also their visual presentation. So I tried to answer the question: Can you be visually reflective? with a yes – and show some examples. you can find my presentation here.

Separation of reflective and representa- tive portfolios?

I teach multimedia design. A lot of my students easily see the need for a presentation portfolio, where they can show off work to future employers etc. But they get confused as to the purpose of a more reflective portfolio. They have a tendency to feel that their being reflective will hinder the show of work. My solution to this dilemma so far has been to separate the two. That is have my students create both a presentation portfolio and a more reflective one. The latter then has teachers (and fellow students) as the target group.

But right now I am working on the idea of combining the two – because I believe that most employers will want to hire people not only on their “hard” technical skills, but also on there ability to express their competences in reflective text.

New book on portfolio in practice

This new book is published by Knowledge Lab at University in Southern Denmark. In the book I have interviewed 4 different practitioners of portfolio in education. I describe the four different approaches to the use of portfolio in education through a scaffolding developed by Lars Qvortrup in his book Knowledge, Education and Learning from 2006.

The edcuations in the book, where portfolio is used, is at the level of the last years of primary school and the first years of a bachelor level further education.
