Having just finished the e-portfolio examination of 29 students at the Multimediadesigner Programme at Odense Technical College and Tietgen Business School, Odense, Denmark it became very clear to me that e-portfolios helps students know themselves. Simply for the reason that portfolios give you a chance to see what and how you are doing. It enables you to be a witness to yourself. This again allows you to compare the self presented in the portfolio with your perception of you. What made this clear was that several students explained that they were surprised by the progress they had make in certain subjects. Also some reported that they perceived themselves as shy but had realised they were not acting it when reading the portfolio. For a young person (or a person of any age, actually) it is sometimes difficult to differ between who you think you should be, and who you actually are. This gap cannot be bridged without stepping away or gaining a little distance to yourself. The portfolio can give this distance.
